In 1962 MR, the readings in the Commons are often attached to particular Mass formularies, known by the first words of their introit (e.g. Sacerdotes Dei, Salus autem, In medio). Since some formularies have the same first words, combinations of the following abbreviations have been used to refer to each category of saint within each Common:

Pasc/ExPasc

In Easter/Outside Easter

Pont/NonPont

Bishop/Not a Bishop

Martyr/Not a Martyr

1st, 2nd or 3rd formulary

For OLM, when a saints' day is in italics, this indicates that the reading for that saint is optional. (Conversely, when the saints' day is in normal type, the reading is obligatory.)

Some lections in OLM refer to Masses and other celebrations found not in the Missal, but in parts of the Rituale, such as the Pontifical and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

The numbering of Ritual Masses, Masses for Various Needs and Occasions, Votive Masses, and Masses for the Dead are those from the relevant Missal.
